Eligibility & Enrollment

Understanding when you can enroll and who is eligible for health care coverage is the first step in making the most of your benefits. This page outlines eligibility requirements and when you can enroll or make changes to your retiree health care coverage.

Who Is Eligible for Retiree Health Care Coverage?

  • You are eligible for retiree medical coverage if you are at least age 55 and have completed 10 consecutive years of full-time service. Your medical, dental, and vision options are then based on age and Medicare eligibility, for both you and any covered spouse or dependents.
  • The following dependents are eligible for Atmos Energy retiree medical coverage:
    • Your legal spouse
    • Your child(ren) or your spouse’s child(ren) under the age of 25
    • Disabled children: An unmarried child age 26 or older who is disabled and is dependent on you

Note: If you want to cover a dependent, you must provide documentation to verify your dependent’s eligibility. Learn more below.

When Can I Enroll or Make Changes?

When You First Retire

When you retire, your active employee coverage continues through the end of the month in which you leave the company, and retiree coverage begins on the first of the following month.

During Open Enrollment

  • Make changes once a year during Open Enrollment in October or November.
  • If you choose to cancel your coverage during Open Enrollment, you can only re-enroll later if you experience a qualifying life event. Otherwise, all changes must be made during the annual open enrollment period.
If You Experience a Qualifying Life Event

When you experience certain life events (such as marriage, divorce, loss of coverage, death of a dependent), you can make changes to your benefits. In most cases, you need to make changes within 31 days of the life event. Your changes will go into effect on the date of the qualifying life event.

Qualifying Life Event Dependent Verification

To cover a new dependent as a result of a qualifying life event, email the Atmos Energy Benefits Team at retiree@atmosenergy.com or call the Retiree Line at 800-888-0149.

NOTE: Surviving spouses who choose to exit the plan will not be able to re-enroll.
